Jocelyn Jane Cox Bio
September 11, 2007

I am a figure skating coach and former national competitor in Ice Dance and Pair with my older brother. I grew up in a tiny farm town in Wisconsin, population 3,000 (we trained in Madison, WI, Janesville, WI, and then at the University of Delaware) and now I live in New York City. Before coaching became my full-time gig, I sold books in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware; peddled T-shirts on the streets of Galway, Ireland; wrote advertising copy for gold mines in Denver, Colorado; pleasantly answered phones while wearing a headset in Boston; and taught writing to fourth graders and college students at various schools around New York. I started playing ice hockey in college, at the University of Pensylvania, and still sometimes play on women’s leagues. My two favorite forms of punctuation are Ellipses and Parentheses (but this is probably obvious…)
I hold a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a concentration in Fiction from Sarah Lawrence College. I am currently working on a memoir called “Skate At Your Own Risk” about competing in both dance and pair with my brother: the anxieties, the disappointments, the many injuries, and, of course, lots of laughter. I have also started working on a book called, “It’s Good to Have Goals” about women’s ice hockey. My writing has appeared in JANE, Roanoke Review, Literal Latte, Professional Skater Magazine, icenetwork.com, and the White Plains Times, among other publications. I have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and anthologized in Tartts 2 by Livingston Press.

I realise that Skating can be a tough profession, working long hours in a harsh environment, but surely not as demanding as selling T-shirts in the City of the Tribes?
best wishes
Peter Kennedy
Ps. No relation of the famous US Olympic skater!

Impressive bio, Jocelyn. I cannot wait to read the books you are currently writing! They are sure to both be page turners.
Good luck!

Jocelyn,
My husband and I fondly remember our first trip to Ireland, including our run-in with what we called the “Girl Gangs of Galway”. Did you hang out on Quay Street much? Maybe we have met before the PSA conference……
If your book is half as interesting as your bio, I’m buying!
