My saintly mother! She would wake around 4:45am to get me up at 5am to get ready for skating at our local outdoor rink starting at 5:30am. She now tells me that she used to hear her alarm and think, oh my god, what time can I go to sleep tonight! Eventually I started getting up before her and letting her sleep until we had to leave when I tip toe into her room and gently wake her so my dad wouldn't wake.
Skating in New Jersey happened for a while. That was about an hour's drive one way, w/out traffic. And yes, we did that before school in the a.m.
When I switched coaches, she began the 45 min treck to Rockland County where she'd drop me off, then go home to deal with my 2 siblings, then come back to pick me up a few hrs later.
God bless you mom!

I'm starting my first shuttle to 6 a.m. ice for my daughter tomorrow morning. I still can't believe I'm waking up at 5 a.m. to shiver at an ice rink. Too bad I don't drink coffee, hey? Maybe I should start...

Our parents used to make 2 trips from Maryland to Delaware every weekend for our lessons. We would get out of school early every Friday, drive up to Delaware, skate a few sessions, have dinner, waste time walking around the mall or something and then go back to the rink for a late session. Then my dad would take us for a early morning session on Sunday morning. We would leave at 4am. There is only one thing that can make anybody do these things for another person...unabounding LOVE! Thanks Mom and Dad! I think you are a little nuts, but thanks!

oh yeah...ma would drive 45 min one way, drop off, drive back, work for 2.5 hours then drive back another 45 min to come get me. still makes no sense, driving an extra total of 1.5 hrs (no traffic days) to put in 2.5 work hrs. nuts, but the truth is, she couldn't sit still at the rink for 4 hours while i skated. the day i turned 16 she took me for my driving permit test and signed me up for the road test all in the same day.

I must agree most definitely with Heartig: changing in the car like superman became a well learned ability, even more so when it was the shuffle between gymnastics and skating practice. I think the hardest part was changing into tights... what a pain!

ps THANKS MOMMY!!! (and Daddy too!)

Is this a joke? In Russia we had no mothers.
The State raised us and we had only to thank the politburo for the opportunity to represent our communities at the regional levels. Of course, once a skater "made it" to the national level we were allowed many many "extras". I knew of a skater who was given a Vespa and it was her job to transport parents from one medical appointment to another. She eventually gave up skating.

This mom outlines a very exhausting day!

Though I must say that it's not just ice skating: my mother (and father) drove me all over the world for baseball when I was a child. I guess because it was a team, there was a lot more carpooling, though.
